Amit Aggarwal unveils a 6,000-square-foot flagship store in Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda, showcasing his couture, occasionwear, accessories, and prêt line in a striking architectural space designed by Thotpot Designs. The store blends heritage elements with experimental design, offering a tactile, immersive shopping experience that reflects the designer’s expanding retail ambitions.
New Delhi-based fashion designer Amit Aggarwal has opened a new flagship store in Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda art district, bringing the complete universe of his eponymous label under one roof. Spanning 6,000 square feet across two levels, the Kala Ghoda store marks a new chapter in the designer’s retail expansion, bringing together his womenswear and menswear couture, occasionwear, accessories, and revived prêt line, AM.IT, under a single roof.
Designed by architect Niket Deshpande of Thotpot Designs, the project responds to its site constraints. Situated within a heritage Mumbai building, the windowless, split-level space features exposed metal girders, structural projections, and irregular geometry. Instead of concealing these architectural elements, the design team has incorporated them into the spatial narrative, retaining the building’s original character while reinterpreting its interiors. Outside, sculptural crests inspired by one of the label’s signature emblems have replaced conventional storefront windows, creating a distinctive presence on the historic streetscape.
The space translates the label’s experimental approach to biomimetic forms, materials, and construction into an architectural language of concrete, sculptural volumes, and controlled lighting. The predominantly monochromatic, brutalist interiors create a restrained backdrop for the label’s signature silhouettes, intricate textiles, and material explorations, allowing the garments to remain firmly in focus. At the centre of the store is a 13-foot suspended pod, a recurring motif in Aggarwal’s visual language that references his long-term preoccupation with ideas of origin, containment, and transformation. The installation serves as a conceptual anchor and spatial focal point, organising the experience around the objects of desire housed within the store.
The store’s design builds on Aggarwal’s earlier explorations of space and perception, moving towards an immersive, environmental retail experience designed to encourage a slower, more considered engagement with the collections. Its stepped layout gives each category a distinct identity while maintaining visual continuity across the two levels.
Located in Kala Ghoda, Mumbai’s storied art, fashion, and design district, the flagship store also reflects Aggarwal’s expanding retail ambitions as luxury shoppers turn away from the overpolished, frictionless, AI-softened world of online commerce for a more craft-led, tactile, materialistic approach to shopping. The retail space lets visitors experience Aggarwal’s different offerings as part of a cohesive, tangible whole.
