Life is nothing short of a mythic saga, isn’t it? Think about it — our lives are filled with epic struggles, grand ambitions, haunting fears, and fleeting triumphs. Sure, we don’t battle demons or climb Mount Olympus, but tell me doing endless dishes and laundry isn’t our version of Sisyphus pushing that rock. Even in a ridiculous, brain-rot era of late capitalism, it’s all still there: the hero’s journey, the fall from grace, the redemption arc, creating our personal mythos; it's lore. As an outsider/non-listener, I see metal as a genre that taps into this inherent grandeur of life, amplifying it with thundering guitars, soaring vocals, and lyrics that channel existential crises, battles, and rebirths. Listening to metal often feels like stepping into the role of a warrior on a mythic quest, even when you're stuck in traffic.

That spirit of modern mythology takes center stage in Deluge, the latest EP from the Bangalore-based progressive metalcore outfit, Among the Signs. With influences spanning progressive metal, post-rock, and metalcore, the band constructs a soundscape that is both devastatingly heavy and melodic. Deluge emerges as a concept story, a narrative journey chronicling the rebirth of humanity through the eyes of an Oracle. Each track is a chapter, weaving a tale of despair, resilience, and ultimately, hope. Think of it as a metalcore epic, told in six acts.

It kicks off with Interminable Night, a prologue that captures the endless tug-of-war between the choices we make and the paths we’re forced to follow. The feeling of being stuck, yet yearning for more? We’ve all been there. From there, Visions dives into existential despair, as the protagonist grapples with the illusion of the mundane while yearning for something transcendent. Convolutions takes us deeper into the chaos, wrestling with faith and the contradictions of life. It’s about facing your shadows and holding on to purpose — even when it feels like you’re running on empty.  The story then crescendos into A Monolith for the Damned, depicting humanity’s self-destructive thirst for power.

But amidst the ruins, there’s a spark of ingenuity. Ingenuity is Bliss shifts the tone with a glimmer of hope, urging us to rise above the negativity, rebuild what’s broken, and embrace creativity as our salvation. The EP culminates in Dystopian Grandeur, a cinematic closer that paints a picture of a fractured world teetering on the edge of collapse. The grandiosity of the track’s soundscape reflects the magnitude of its theme. It’s a bleak yet awe-inspiring vision, leaving listeners with a sense of both doom and resilience.

Deluge flows like a storybook, with each song building on the last and pulling you deeper into its world. It’s heavy, it’s ambitious, and has that raw emotional punch that makes metal so cathartic. The crushing riffs, the melodic choruses, layered with the sprawling, atmospheres of post-rock; and there you have it — a modern-day epic, told in metal.
