The need for authentic representation and understanding of LGBTQIA+ experiences is paramount. This is precisely where Queerbeat steps in — a pioneering independent collaborative journalism project dedicated to deeply and accurately covering LGBTQIA+ individuals in India, in their own voices.
At Queerbeat, the idea is not merely to narrate stories of triumph or tribulation within the queer community but also to critically examine the internal challenges and complexities it faces. From culture to politics, art to crime, and beyond, Queerbeat delves into every aspect of queerness; fostering a platform where voices once marginalized can resonate and be heard.
The Youth Storytelling Project, a cornerstone initiative of Queerbeat, aims to unite eight young queer writers and artists under the age of 30. These creatives will craft individual works shedding light on queer lives in India, and exploring the nuances and intricacies often overlooked by mainstream narratives. These pieces, published in both English and Hindi, aspire to ignite public discourse, challenging societal biases and fostering empathy and understanding.
While Queerbeat primarily focuses on long-form non-fiction narrative journalism, the Youth Storytelling Project also welcomes digital art projects, including comics and other forms of graphic journalism. These visual narratives serve as powerful tools to convey stories, emotions, and experiences, enriching the project with diverse storytelling mediums.
The significance of the Youth Storytelling Project transcends mere journalism — it is a catalyst for social change. By amplifying the voices of LGBTQIA+ youth, the project not only sheds light on underreported issues but also endeavors to dismantle prejudice and indifference prevalent in Indian society.
The project's focus on diverse representation while embracing individuals from Dalit, Bahujan, Adivasi, disabled, and religious minority backgrounds ensures that a multitude of experiences are authentically portrayed. This inclusivity is not just a token gesture but a fundamental aspect of Queerbeat's ethos; enriching the tapestry of queer narratives.
Queerbeat acknowledges the value of the contributors' labor by offering a lump sum remuneration of Rs 35,000 upon project completion. Moreover, the publication of these stories and art projects on the Queerbeat website ensures a wider reach and audience; fostering further dialogue and understanding. Furthermore, the planned in-person gathering provides a platform for cohort members to share their experiences which provides a sense of community and solidarity amongst queer creatives.
