Karthik Shetty's photography is a delicate interplay between an almost ethereal cinematic beauty and a organic rawness that allows him to relay the emotions and the verve of his subjects to his audiences. We sat down with the creative to get a sense of what inspires him as well as how he conceptualizes and brings his art to life.
Tell us about your project.
This is documentary photo series named Gulabi (name after my grandma) which captures the daily of my 90 year old grandma in her quaint home in Udupi, Karnataka, India. The photographs are testament to the resilience and grace of the human spirit in the face of aging ,and a celebration of the beauty of everyday life.Gulabi stands as a poignant reminder that the human spirit can flourish and thrive in even the most modest of surroundings. It urges us to recognize the beauty that lies in the simplest of moments, the everyday rituals, and the connections that weave the tapestry of our lives. Through this series, we are invited to celebrate the tenacity of the human spirit, the allure of aging, and the profound grace that accompanies a life well-lived.
A visual journey that encapsulates the essence of Gulabi — a tribute to the extraordinary within the ordinary, an ode to the timeless wisdom, and an invitation to revel in the boundless beauty of everyday life.
What are some of your biggest influences as an artist?
As an artist, I find that my biggest influences stem from the diverse tapestry of life itself. One of the primary sources of inspiration for me is the act of observing and immersing myself in the world around me. I draw immense inspiration from the everyday moments, the subtle nuances, and the extraordinary stories that unfold in the lives of people.
Listening to the life stories of individuals is a profound source of influence for me. Each person carries a unique narrative, rich with experiences, emotions, and perspectives. By attentively listening to these stories, I gain a deeper understanding of the human condition and the myriad of emotions that shape our existence. The triumphs, the struggles, the joys, and the sorrows—they all serve as a wellspring of creative fuel that invigorates my artistic expression.
Beyond individual stories, I also draw inspiration from the broader aspects of life. The natural world, with its awe-inspiring landscapes and intricate ecosystems, has a profound impact on my creative process. The interplay of light and shadow, the vibrant colors of a sunset, or the gentle rustling of leaves in a forest — all these elements evoke a sense of wonder and provide me with a deep well of inspiration.
Furthermore, the arts and cultural heritage of different societies have a profound influence on my work. Exploring diverse artistic traditions, whether through literature, music, painting, or dance, exposes me to a multitude of creative expressions and opens up new possibilities for my own artistry. The works of past and contemporary artists, their unique styles, and their exploration of profound themes inspire me to continually push the boundaries of my own creativity.
In essence, my influences as an artist are deeply rooted in the richness of life itself. Nature. The beauty and complexity of the natural world have long been a source of inspiration and dreams and the realm of imagination can be a powerful source of inspiration.

My creative process begins with keen observation of the world around me, drawing inspiration from the diverse experiences and phenomena I encounter. Through careful observation, I gather ideas and concepts that serve as the foundation for my creative endeavors.
The purpose behind my creations is to provide people with a transformative experience. I strive to create art and stories that resonate deeply with others, allowing them to immerse themselves in parallel lives and explore different perspectives. I believe in the power of storytelling and art to ignite imagination, evoke emotions, and provoke introspection.
One of the fundamental intentions behind my creative work is to offer healing to individuals. I aim to create a space where people can find solace, relate to the struggles and triumphs depicted in my art, and ultimately experience a sense of catharsis. Through my creative expressions, I hope to contribute to the process of personal growth and emotional well-being.
