Between 1955 to 1975, a massive amount of Indians immigrated to the UK. The break up of the British empire, the partition ipon India and Pakistan and the The British Nationality Act of 1948, which allowed for relatively unrestricted migration from the Commonwealth were some of the factors behind it. This created a whole generation of third culture kids that embraced their dual identities and their music tastes reflected this fusion as well. The result was Punjabi Garage. Originating in England in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Punjabi garage evolved as a unique sound that celebrated British Asian youth culture. Influenced heavily by garage house, this genre fused high-energy beats with folk Punjabi vocal samples, creating a sound that redefined global music. Today that sound represents the Zeitgeist
Experimenting with the same, 'Bekadran', is a new genre-blurring track that merges India’s indie music scene with the iconic UK drum and bass (DnB) sound, a beat loved by the South Asian diaspora worldwide. This song, a collaboration between three powerhouse artists, Viepsa, Calm, and Raj, is both daring and soulful. Each artist brings their unique style to the table, creating something nostalgic yet fresh, familiar yet inventive. Viepsa’s raw edge, Calm’s dynamic rap, and Raj’s jazzy, global production come together in a track that pulses with rhythm, reflection, and energy.
Bekadran is centred around the perfect blend of traditional Indian sounds with a contemporary beat. Viepsa Arora, a multi-genre artist from New Delhi, is known for her unfiltered voice and diverse musical influences, from bedroom pop and dream pop to Indian indie and hip-hop. Calm, is the one half of Seedhe Maut, one of the biggest names in the country. In Bekadran, Viepsa’s powerful Punjabi rap meets Calm’s Hindi verse with a crisp contemporary edge, in a lyrical flow that feels like a conversation between cultures and generations. Raj, a Delhi-based guitarist and producer whose sound fuses jazz, neo-soul, and electronic influences, lends his artistry to the track. Together, these verses weave through his production which anchors the track with smooth synths, dreamy keys, and a deep bassline that embodies the classic UK garage sound. The rhythm in Bekadran is distinct, merging the rich, layered textures of indie music with the hard-hitting percussion of DnB, creating a sound that’s global yet rooted in South Asian musical heritage.
A collaboration of voices and identities, Bekadran is proof that cultures aren't lost with time, they merge into each other and become something new and live on through hybridity.
