This piece explores four standout spots, Knots & Crosses, Sando Club, Sandowitch, and Born and Bread, each offering a unique take on the humble sandwich. From inventive flavour combinations to nostalgic comfort bites, these places prove that a perfectly made sandwich can be a meal worth chasing.
A perfect sandwich can be a perfect meal , and I stand by this. In the Adiga household, we make a mean, green, fighting-machine kind of pesto chicken sandwich. The bread is toasted perfectly, the pesto is bursting with copious amounts of garlic, the chicken is roasted in the oven to perfection (also with garlic, nobody in our family shies away from it), and the vegetables are cut to just the right size, not too big, not too small. I’m salivating as I write this. And all that’s left to do is take that perfect first bite, getting a little bit of everything. Pair this with your morning coffee, Lizzie McGuire was wrong: this is what dreams are made of.
Getting the perfect sandwich is no easy feat. Every element must be in harmony, like a church choir singing at Sunday mass. And Bengaluru, with its new-restaurant-a-minute pace, has a girl spoilt for choice. But these four sandwich spots are where we think you should go to satiate your next toasty craving.
A small cloud kitchen in Domlur, Knots & Crosses does only sandwiches, a couple of staple sides consisting of hand-cut fries, onion rings and chicken wings, and a cookie, and they do it like nobody else. With a kitchen pick up and delivery option, Knots & Crosses has a rotating season specific menu along with some favourites like the evergreen Grilled Cheese. Their new summer menu includes a Ham, Brie and Berry toast (wow) and a Roasted Summer Pumpkin Sandwich. Order from them here.
Located in Ashok Nagar, Sando Club has an array of eclectically named sandwiches to choose from. From The Hulk, which is a smoky falafel sandwich to Grind on my Thai, a tangy Thai green curry, fried chicken sandwich, the restaurant makes room for everyone, the furious and the freaky. What sets it apart is its almost obsessive attention to freshness and creativity, with everything made in-house daily and a menu that feels more like a “mad lab” of ideas. The Sando Club has in-house dining, along with delivery. Book a table here.
Sandowitch is the most pocket-friendly player in this round up. A fairly new kid on the sandwich block, the space is located on the ever-busy 100 ft road in Indiranagar. Built on the idea that everyday food doesn’t have to be boring, Sandowitch boasts of a myriad of ‘sandos’ ranging from hot honey fried chicken to masala-loaded egg and paneer creations. The space itself channels a fun, almost retro diner energy, with a grab-and-go format. Follow them on Instagram here.
A South Indian spin on the beloved sandwich, this Jayanagar restaurant moves beyond the usual format. The menu moves beyond standard fillings into inventive territory, with sandos like ghee roast chicken, xacuti-spiced mushrooms, and even chilli mutton tucked into poee or pillowy milk bread. Beyond sandwiches, the sides and small plates carry the same sensibility, turning familiar comfort food into something more layered and thoughtful. The space itself mirrors this approach: casual and unfussy, but with just enough design detail to make it feel anything but generic.
