What possibly might not make an appearance on your to-do list if you were ever to visit Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh, the Jama Masjid located there actually has a lot more historical value to offer than one would imagine.

Built by Raja Ali Khan, the mosque is the only one in India that has bilingual inscriptions, according to The Heritage Lab. The mosque patron is acknowledged in Arabic, along with verses of the Quran that shed light on the merits of building a mosque. The calligrapher, Mustafa’s name is seen inscribed too.

The Heritage Lab also states that towards the south end of the prayer hall, there are Sanskrit inscriptions in Devnagari script that mention the astronomical position, date, and year according to the Hindu Samvat calendar.

The Jama Masjid of Burhanpur almost stands example to coexistence without conflict. In addition to the beauty of Mughal architecture that it proudly eludes, it gives out an even more important message- of harmony.
