For photographers residing in India, an exciting opportunity is on the horizon – a workshop tailored towards honing the skills necessary for crafting compelling visual narratives and bringing them to the printed page. The 'Image Assembly: Towards a Practice of Publishing', this workshop, led by the experienced duo of Cécile Poimboeuf-Koizumi and Tanvi Mishra, promises an immersive journey into the world of editing, sequencing, and designing image-based publications.

The workshop is designed for photographers who have been diligently working on substantial image-based projects and are ready to take the next step towards publication. Participants are expected to bring a wealth of material to the table, not only in terms of images but also accompanying texts, archival materials, and other relevant ephemera. The aim is to guide them through the process of refining their work and transforming it into a tangible form – whether it be a photo book, a zine, or another publication format.

Spanning from May to August 2024, the workshop is divided into both in-person and online sessions to accommodate the diverse needs and schedules of the participants. The journey kicks off in early May with an in-person session in Delhi focusing on the crucial aspect of editing. Subsequent sessions, conducted online, delve into fieldwork, collation, and further editing, allowing participants to explore the intricacies of visual storytelling in depth. The workshop concludes with another in-person session in August, where the focus shifts to sequencing, designing, and ultimately, bringing the publication to life.

Facilitated by Cécile Poimboeuf-Koizumi and Tanvi Mishra, both experts in the field of image curation and publication, the workshop offers invaluable insights and hands-on guidance. Cécile Poimboeuf-Koizumi, the owner and director of Chose Commune, brings her rich experience in publishing and art direction to the table. Tanvi Mishra, with her background in photo editing, curation, and writing, complements the team, offering a nuanced perspective on visual storytelling and representation.

The workshop adopts a holistic approach to the process of image assembly, incorporating lectures, discussions, individual and group exercises, and practical demonstrations. Participants are encouraged to not only refine their own work but also engage with their peers' projects, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. From understanding the nuances of image editing to mastering the intricacies of book design and printing processes, the workshop equips participants with the tools and knowledge necessary to realize their publishing aspirations.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the workshop is its accessibility. Not only is the workshop tuition-free, but PhotoSouthAsia also provides each participant with accommodation, per diem, and travel expenses to and from Delhi for the in-person sessions. This commitment to accessibility ensures that talented photographers from diverse backgrounds have the opportunity to participate and thrive.

Interested photographers are invited to submit their applications before the deadline on March 18, 2024. The application process is streamlined and conducted online, ensuring ease of access for all applicants.

With its comprehensive curriculum, experienced facilitators, and commitment to accessibility, the workshop is poised to empower a new generation of visual storytellers, shaping the landscape of photography publishing in India and beyond.
