The process of writing requires long, quiet hours of introspection with the self for one to be able to perfectly put down one’s thoughts on paper. While many hold the belief that the art is soon to become extinct in the fast-paced urban lifestyle that we lead today, here is an organisation that is trying to prove them wrong by providing aspiring writers, lyricists and poets with an avenue to showcase their skills.
Half and One, a news and opinion website based in Shillong, is hosting a writing competition called ‘The Half and One Prize’. The winner gets to bag the astounding cash prize of INR 1 lakh. The organisers are also giving consolation prizes of INR 10,000/- each to five selected works. The competition is open for participation to people from all over the world. The entry fee for Indian and international participants is INR 700 and $12 respectively. Interested individuals can submit a short story, poem, a narrative nonfiction piece, a short short story and written song all of which need to be in English. A short story and a short short story has to be between 2000 to 5000 words and a 1000 to 2000 words respectively. Submission are limited to one per entry.
There are no specific themes that are mandatory for the participants to write about and instead, they will be judged on their style of writing and content. A list of selected works will be decided upon by a group of poets, writers and journalists based in India, UK and USA. The names of the judges that will determine which of these submissions will be winning or be one of the five receiving the consolation prize, will be announced after the passing of the final deadline of submissions for the competition. The short stories will be published in a collection later.
