The hustle and bustle of city life coupled with the grind of the daily routine often stifles our creativity. Sometimes we often stare at a blank canvas constantly pondering on the first brushstroke or at an empty piece of paper but the ink will not flow. This form of creative blindness or lack of inspiration can frustrate artists or writers. Or you might have been on a creative spree lately and are looking for inspiration to keep the creative juices flowing. In both cases, an artist residency, away from home and in the company of like-minded individuals, can do wonders for your creative process.

A young contemporary art Gallery housed in Colaba, Mumbai — Apre Art House — is offering a unique residency program to support emerging art practitioners. It is the second edition of their Artist Residency Program 2023. The program will select eight artists who will be offered an opportunity to venture beyond their existing creative ecosystems through collaboration with artists from diverse backgrounds. The duration of the program is 8 weeks, during which the resident artist will be encouraged to exchange ideas, have discussions and experience the dynamic art culture of Mumbai. The aim of the residency is to have multi-disciplinary practices engage with the gallery’s body of work. The program will involve organic interaction with the local community and explore possibilities and the development of the artist’s practice through different modules, regular mentorship, and feedback from the gallery director, Ms. Prerna Jain, and other experts and curators.

The residency will take place within the sprawling confines of a 10,000-square-foot property nestled in Sakinaka, Mumbai. Within this artistic haven, each artist will be granted an expansive 2,500 square feet of personal space to unleash their creative vision. The location of residency is conveniently situated near the airport and a mere 7-minute jaunt from the metro, ensuring seamless connectivity to the vibrant heartbeat of the city. As a delightful bonus, the terrace of this sanctuary offers panoramic views of the city skyline, adorned by the vast expanse of open skies. The focus of the accommodation lies primarily in providing ample studio space to nurture creativity, while also having the essential facilities for day-to-day living.

The salient features of the program will include invigorating discussions and invaluable mentorship opportunities. Through this harmonious collaboration with esteemed curators who align with each artist’s creative practice, the participants will gain profound insights into their own creative journeys. To facilitate this process, artists are encouraged to furnish an outline of their aspirations and objectives, enabling the gallery to align its efforts in a synergistic manner, working hand in hand with the artists to manifest their artistic visions. As a testament to their commitment, the gallery offers access to a wealth of academic papers and literature from their expansive library, tailored to support and complement the artists' practices.

Open studio visits, contingent upon the whims of the seasons, provide a golden opportunity for artists to bask in the spotlight and receive valuable feedback from a diverse array of appreciative souls, expanding their reach and exposure. Additionally, resident artists are granted the thrilling prospect of being considered for participation in the gallery's upcoming shows, depending on the overarching theme of the same.
