When you’ve lived in Mumbai long enough, dolphins are the last thing you’d expect to see popping out of our murky waters — but stranger things have happened. Although this still isn’t the case right here in Mumbai, if you’re willing to make a trip out of it, there’s a great little getaway to consider visiting over the weekend. Located only a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of Mumbai, you can spend your quick getaway spotting these friendly aquatic mammals in their natural habitat along a beach in Dapoli.

Dapoli, a small town in Ratnagiri, was used by the British to set up camp and till date, bears structures from the time of the British Raj albeit many are mere ruins today. Situated around five hours away from Mumbai, Dapoli’s dolphins are normally spotted between November and February, due to winter waters being calmer. Driving down is perhaps your best option from Mumbai, due to the closest train station being 40 km away from Dapoli.

Stay in Dapoli isn’t expensive, but we’d suggest picking a homestay over a standard hotel to get a more local feel of the place. With multiple long weekends coming up this year, perhaps plan ahead for the next time round — make this year the one where you stop planning and actually start doing. Plus, who doesn’t want to get a glimpse or two of these joyous sea mammals?
