How The Indian Railway System Got Toilets

Thought the Indian Railway System always had inbuilt bathrooms? Think again. We have a very special man to thank for their installation and he went by the name of Okhil Chandra Sen. Not to mention the jackfruit that did him in.

Apparently his letter of complaint (featured below) written back in 1909 to West Bengal’s Sahibganj divisional railway has since been credited for kicking off the practice of installing toilets on trains. Rumour has it that it’s still on display at India’s National Rail Museum.

So the next time your belly is too much swelling with jackfruit and all ‘your shocking’ is not exposed to man & female women on platform, remember O.C.S--the man who changed the game.
