Road trips in India are glorious. We’ve got amazing views, dhabas with fantastic food (but questionable standards of hygiene) and plenty of places to visit that are accessible only via road. A quintessential part of any road trip is to stop for chai breaks or pee breaks. However, let’s get real for a second. Chai stalls are a lot easier to come by than a clean, hygienic bathroom. And that fact alone deters most women from hitting the road. Kunal Sheth’s app ‘GottaGo’ is available to help solve this very problem.

GottaGo is a free app that helps you find nearby public restrooms. It is now available onIOS and has been available onAndroid, since 2015. It is equipped to display clean bathrooms on a map, with the tap of a button. Directions are provided to clean bathrooms, along with additional information. The app aims to help curb the growing risk of infectious diseases such as an urinary tract infection, or infections amongst children.

Although the app came into existence in 2015, Kunal initially had a website up in 2010, called p911.in. With smartphones gaining popularity in India, it only made sense to convert his website into an app. The app provides users with the option to rate the facility after they’ve used it, and update information on whether the restroom is temporarily out of order, or if it has completely shut down. GottaGo is currently live in over a 100 cities across India, with 70,000 places listed across malls, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, railway stations, museums and more. They’ve even gone international now. The app has listed about 1000 places in Singapore already. Contrary to popular belief, their content isn’t crowd-sourced. It is validated by their team and interns, in each city.

Their recent updates to the app include incorporating 18 languages to choose from, and making the Android app user-friendly to those with visual disabilities. The app will slowly expand on places beyond clean toilets, due to the amount of data they have collected over the years.

If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard about this app before, it’s probably because the app hasn’t been marketed as much. You can do your bit for them, by telling your friends. Especially the ones who love to road trip.
