In Mumbai, where pollution clouds the night sky, trying to spot a star or two isn’t really an ideal activity. But what if we told you there was a village right here in Maharashtra where the stars come to you? Okay, maybe not stars—fireflies. A naturally occurring phenomenon happens every year, like something right out of a fairy tale! For two weeks, hundreds of fireflies light Purushwadi up and luckily Grassroutes, an organization that aims to bring together urban and rural India chanced upon it.

‘The Festival Of A Million Fireflies’ allows individuals to spend two days simply connecting with the village and its people; taking in village life in all its glory. Partake in the various activities they have on offer, like treks, farming, and swimming in the river, till the sun sets and the fireflies come out. The villagers not just host you but also offer organic meals cooked by them, as well as fruits (that you can pick yourself!) such as mangoes, karvandas and jamuns.

The locals are beyond humble and would be glad to have a conversation with you about how, despite being in a drought- stricken village, they flourished with the help of this stunning phenomenon. These humble folks will make sure to give you a taste of the rustic life as you take in the view of a million fireflies lighting up the environment.

The festival begins from May 26 and goes on till June 10th. If you would like to visit the quaint village of Purushwadi, you can book your tickets here. For more details, click here.
