To the rest of the world, Japan is an enigma. Full of curiosities and culture so unique that it could take lifetimes to fully understand. But there is one element that seems to translate to any country, the universal language of shopping. This is something that Miyake Junya, co-founder of retail chain Miniso quickly realised when he decided to set up their first Indian outlet in Ambience Mall, Delhi.

Miniso has had a staggering growth rate with 2,000 stores over 60 countries and an average of 60-100 new outlets opening every month. The Delhi branch is only the beginning of the Miniso India chapter and eventually they hope it will be one of the top five markets in terms of revenue. The brand specialises in fashion and lifestyle products, from stationery and homeware to health and beauty, all starting from the low low price of Rs. 150.

Though we are self-confessed weeaboos (Japanophiles to the noobs) and any chance to get our hands on Japanese merch is met with nothing short of glee, the entry of Miniso comes with mixed feelings. Although we’re sure that a visit there will end in an indiscriminate spending spree, we’re also aware of the many pitfalls of fast fashion, something that Miniso is well-known for. Most of their products are plastic-based and - let’s be honest - not built to last, so we have a request for Miniso shoppers across the country. Be a conscientious consumer, buy to your heart’s content but make it last and if and when you do have to dispose of a product, do so the right way, India is already in the midst of an ecological crisis so make sure you aren’t a part of it.
