Juggling The Imaginary & The Real: Sreyashi Das's Fashion Line Tells You To Dream Big

Founder and designer of the fashion collective, SRD, Sreyashi Raka Das loves juggling the imaginary, as well as the real world through her work. She started SRD in her hometown, Shantiniketan in 2018 when she was only 22 years old. “Fashion is the language through which I talk and express my feelings, no matter whether I am happy, sad, angry, excited or just lost. Fashion has always given me the wings to fly.” says Sreyashi.

At SRD, each piece of clothing is made from Khadi and Khesh in the looms of Birbhum, West Bengal, and is crafted exclusively by SRD artists. Started with just 800 bucks and a head full of dreams, it is what Sreyasi calls, a ‘non-judgemental’, ‘feelings-based’ fashion line, making clothes for across genders, colours, sizes and minds. From sketching, weaving to stitching everything is done by the people of Shantiniketan and its nearby villages.

Sreyashi confesses to having been a dreamer since childhood, and was often condescended for being ‘too floaty and average’. But she stuck around with her dreams and eventually manifested them through a creative pursuit. That is how her fashion line, SRD came into existence. “My jamas (clothes) are the babies of my dream world,” says Sreyasi, who feels that just like human beings have their own stories, her clothes too have their own stories, in the way they were yarned and made. In order to ensure that her clothes are made thoughtfully, she uses organic materials like cotton, khadi and Khesh and designs them as sensitively as she can.

“We talk about both Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter to socially stereotyped girl ‘Paka Meye’ (so called over smart girl). SRD is more like a medium through which I connect with ordinary people like us. People who dream, think, care and try to make a better world.” says Sreyasi.
