Shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, hair spray; there are so many things we do to get our hair game right. But what if we start losing it all? Especially at a young age? ‘Gone Kesh’ is movie that explores precisely that.

The trailer starts off with a doctor nonchalantly recommending Enkashi, played by Shweta Tripathi, to have more eggs and milk, and concluding that her hair loss is a basic result of lack of calcium and protein. Its only later that Enkashi gets diagnosed with Alopecia, a rare medical condition where a person starts losing their hair. She happens to have Alopecia totalis, where one loses the hair on their scalp, whereas other types are Alopecia areata (hair loss in patches) and Alopecia universalis (loss of hair on the body).

But the movie takes it further by exploring the idea of beauty and femininity. It depicts how hair loss steals precious years of her youth, dwarfs her ambition and wreaks havoc on her life. In the trailer itself there is a sound bite of an old lady saying – “Kaise hoga iska shaadi-byah?” or “How will she get married?” This is a common troupe in the Indian society where women are constantly burdened with the idea of being “perfect” for their mail counterpart. It follows her struggling with the condition and finally coming to terms with it.

It’s always refreshing to see unconventional narratives in Indian cinema. While most mainstream Hindi movies encourage plastic vanity, this Qassim Khallow directed film explores a different slice of life and helps us question ourselves the true meaning of beauty.

The movie is set to release on 29th March.
