NCPA Will Soon Have One Of The Largest Solar Powered Rooftops In Maharashtra

If the performing arts were to have an Indian address it would undoubtedly be the NCPA. The National Centre for Performing Arts is well known for it’s dedication to artistic revival. Today they’re adding another feather to their cap as they install a 450 KW solar PV System on the rooftop of their establishment which will generate around 6,30,000 units of clean solar power every year.

The installation was inaugurated by Hon. Chief Minister Shri. Devendra Fadnavis after being approved by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) and will reduce a third of the building’s power consumption. It will also cut out more than 525 tons of the yearly Carbon Dioxide emissions. The excess power generated by the panels will also be fed back to the electricity grid as it’s connected to the Solar Net Metering policy of the Maharashtra Government.

With so much of their work being dependent on bright stage lighting and high quality sound projection, the NCPA’s energy consumption has substantially outweighed most builings in the city. This switch has been a year in the making and Chairman Khushroo Suntook is overjoyed that it’s now a reality “This rooftop solar power project is therefore an extremely crucial step demonstrating our commitment to sustainability as well as the society at large.” he says. The installation and maintenance is being handled by Avesta Solar Pvt. Ltd who have taken on the challenge of watching over the project for the next 20 years.

The NCPA has always been committed to excellence in every sphere and as the first cultural institution in the country to be self-sustaining they have proved once again that their aim to give back to the community stretches above and beyond the world of the performing arts.
