When was the last time you took a gardening class? For most, ‘never’ is probably the most suited response to the question. For some, teaching themselves was the only option - unless they went to one of those schools in the hills where everyone was barefoot and had classes under trees. Changing this notion of the subject being offered only in those ‘alternative’ schools, Mumbai University as part of it’s extra mural courses, has introduced a programme catering to managing gardens in small spaces, as well as horticultural management
The Certificate Course in Gardening and Nursery Management (this page is written in Marathi) offers a thorough knowledge of the basics of gardening, and how to care for different types of plants. Topics ranging from understanding soil types to caring for delicate orchids, as well as rose cultivation, are covered. Those undertaking the course will also be taught the uses of fertilizers, the compositions of compounds that different types of plants require. The course largely benefits those in an urban setting as it also teaches indoor gardening as well as managing outdoor and extracellular gardens like rock gardens.
Apart from the fundamentals of gardening, history of the Indian culture is part of the course. This course also teaches care for plants in greenhouses as well as the basics of the Nursery business, which included financial planning and production of flowers. Earthworm farming, a crucial factor effecting the fertility of the soil forms a part of the curriculum as well. In an age of inorganic farming where organic products are become costlier day by day, the course also teaches managing plants yielding vegetables, fruits and herbs.
The course is an all-inclusive INR 12000. It is open to everyone and you don’t have to be enrolled in the university to apply.
