Mumbai may be a cosmopolitan hub which Michelin stars and gastronomic luxuries round every turn, but any local will tell you that the true treasures are far from glamorous. One of the best examples of this understated glory lies tucked away in a quiet by-lane of Colaba Causeway near the Strand Cinema, the New Martin Eating House. For decades it’s been a go-to for locals in need of a quintessential Goan experience and it never fails to deliver.
While they do pride themselves on their Goan fare there’s a hidden gem on the menu that has won the hearts of every regular who graces their simple cream-coloured haven. The Beef (now Buff) Steak, Onion and Chips priced at a joyous Rs. 150 is probably one of the best meals you’ll ever have the privilege to demolish.
This is the definition of a complete meal, sizeable servings of meat, veggies and carbs - thick cut chips AND bread...amen - but what sets it apart is the fact that its quality is undiminished by its low price point. There are plenty of shady dhabas and roadside eateries that will serve you up a plate of greasy beef fry for a pittance and claim excellence, but New Martin will have none of it. The thinly sliced meat has been marinated and cooked to perfection, the sweet sauteed onions set off by the spicy beef, ask them for extra chillies if you dare and then dig in. They truly pride themselves on serving up a great meal without worrying about their returns.
While the restaurant has only 5 tables, seating 20 in total, there is no lull in business and parcels are always heading out the door. If you do want to enjoy the full experience, park yourself at one of the formica tables and wend your way slowly through their menu until you can take no more and then pack some more for later. This is definitely a bucket-list worthy restaurant so next time your mind and body needs reviving, head to this sleepy little establishment to gorge yourself on fine food and satisfy your soul.
