The MoMH is a pioneering establishment; the first museum in India dedicated to preserving, collecting, and exhibiting the rich history of Meenakari. It was inaugurated on March 23, 2024, and is the brainchild of the House of Sunita Shekhawat, a renowned name in the Meenakari community. From the 16th century to the present, the museum houses over 300 images and 100 historical reproductions that trace the evolution of enamelling in India. It is a testament to the Shekhawat family's unwavering dedication to documenting India's gem and jewellery heritage.
Visitors are taken on a journey across space and time instantly as they enter the museum. The collection has been meticulously chosen to highlight influences from India's Art Deco and Mughal eras to Europe's Renaissance. Each piece narrates a story, demonstrating the artistry of the craftsmen and the diverse tapestry of India's heritage.
However, the MoMH is a piece of art within itself rather than simply an archive for artefacts. The museum is an architectural and design marvel, curated by the esteemed jewellery historian Ms. Usha R Balakrishnan. Designed by Studio Lotus and Siddhartha Das Studio, it is a masterwork of cultural space planning, exhibition design, and museum architecture.
