Most of the modern generation is labouring under the delusion that -for the most part - the feminist movement has done its job and we’re already reaping the benefits. The truth is that the war is far from won and one place this is on display is in the strange disparity that has crept into the internet’s oldest, most prolific and shiftiest source of information, Wikipedia.

Recent studies proved that only 9% of Wiki’s edit team were women and that number drops even further to a shocking 3% in India. Though it may seem inconsequential to some, since the open source information base allows edits by all users, it creates a skewed perspective of the information which we access on a daily basis.

To counteract this imbalance the activist group, ‘Feminism In India’ has arranged a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon event this Saturday in collaboration with Khoj International Artists’ Association in Delhi. During the course of the day, you’ll be briefed on the process and guidelines for creating a Wikipedia page, provided with a pre-made list of women artists who lack representation and at the end of the day, all of these newly made pages will be collated.

This is one of many edit-o-thons that have taken place across the world in a bid to make give Wikipedia a database that’s more balanced and ensure that representation is women is curated in an unbiased and accurate manner. Though it may seem a small step, keep in mind that this information will now be available to girls all over the globe to inspire, motivate and facilitate their dreams. Indian artists, especially the female sector, have a hard enough time being taken seriously and this event is your chance to give them the visibility they so desperately need.
