A lush oasis nestled amidst the bustling city of Mumbai, the Aarey Colony, serves as the city's lungs. With its greenery and biodiversity, Aarey Colony is known for its harmonious coexistence with nature and urban life. However, this precious woodland faces continued threats of encroachment and development which highlighs the now pressing issue of its protection and conservation. Recognising the importance of safeguarding such priceless green spaces, the Jehangir Nicholson Gallery has introduced its latest exhibition, 'A Forest in the City'.

"Excited to announce our next exhibition, 'A Forest in the City', presenting the forest as it is variedly imagined, represented, and lived."

Bringing together diverse perspectives from architects, artists, community members, activists and archivists, who are all deeply invested in exploring the relationship between the forest and the city, this exhibition is the outcome of a comprehensive three-year research project, conducted by the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture and Environmental Studies, focusing on the Sanjay Gandhi National Park/Aarey Colony in Mumbai.

This forest in the city is a dynamic space that is constantly being reconfigured by practices and representations. The exhibition is not just a display of objects but a platform for interactive dialogue. From maps and policy documents to cultural artefacts, the exhibition unveils the diverse array of objects that contribute to the construction of this urban forest. Within the museum's walls, these objects engage in a dialogue that surpass conventional boundaries; diving into the intricate interplay between narrative, culture, and meaning. Furthermore, the exhibition challenges and questions traditional categorisations of art; inviting viewers to actively reconsider notions of 'folk,' 'tribal,' and 'contemporary' art forms within the context of urban nature.

As the exhibition unfolds, visitors are invited to embark on a journey of exploration and to gain a deeper insights into the symbiotic connection between environment and humanity. This exhibition is a remarkable opportunity to enhance your understanding of environmental preservation. With its thought-provoking presentations, 'A Forest in the City' offers a unique platform for everyone to reflect on the pressing issues of environmental encroachment that come with modern urban development. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or just an inquisitive urban resident, this exhibition promises to encourage and provoke while inviting you to ponder the delicate balance that must always be maintained between progress and preservation.
