Identity is such a tricky thing. We think we're control of it but we often find ourselves struggling to understand our own selves. Our identities are formed through an amalgamation of our positive and negative experiences along with factors we're unaware of. In our personal struggles, whether it's our sexuality, our addictions or our mental health, an external source of insight or a hand that extends in empathy often opens the gates into understanding the self.

Support groups offer such space. They're an alchemic battleground of the dissection of self through reflection. Often it's hard for people to willingly participate in such a group and understandably so; shame is debilitating. It's caused by our perception of our shortcomings or even by the abuse we may have experienced. We hope that the parts of ourselves that we're ashamed of are never revealed to the outside world. This supression further damages us; distancing us from our loving selves. In such times, recognizing that we might need help and taking that first step to open up to a community that probably understands what you're going through and is operating with the same mission of healing can be life-changing and something that our future selves will forever be grateful to us for.

We have curated a list of online some support groups in India that might just be the thing you need for some self-acceptance and healing.

Experiential Mindfulness Group

This group uses the power of mindfulness to facilitate mental well-being for those experiencing frustration; tiredness, negative thinking, overthinking and restlessness or are experiencing burn out and are finding it difficult to destress even when taking a break. The group helps people explore mindfulness, which is our ability to experience and respond to the real world as perceived through our 5 senses. The aim of the mindfulness practices is to deal with stressors, manage overwhelming emotions, increase motivation, bring focus, and eliminate dysfunctional patterns.

Let's Discuss The Meh

Organised by Mithra Trust, this group is committed to providing a safe space for the queer community and for survivors of all forms of sexual, physical, emotional, and gender-based violence. These sessions allow people to admit that they are not okay or just feeling 'meh' about their lives. The benevolent name provides a gentle gateway to accepting that we are not okay and seeking connection and help to understand and heal ourselves. Their session happens on January 8 from 3:00 - 5:30 PM on Zoom.
