From a young age, we’re taught to appreciate others, and all that they do for us. “Thank your parents, your friends, your well-wishers,” they always said. Not once, maybe not ever, were we imparted a lesson in appreciating all that we ourselves are, and all that we do for ourselves.
Creator Aditya Panikker begins his latest short film ‘Further’ with the words, “I wonder if you realise how far you’ve come. A miracle of sorts, considering your unrealistic dreams and convoluted thoughts” — reminding us to give ourselves the credit we highly deserve for making it through what has possibly been the roughest year for most of us.
The film takes you deep into the little joys and achievements one must celebrate for themselves. Not always will we encounter grand events that change our perspectives. Sometimes, the little things like “looking for a pattern, searching for a rhythm, searching for a story” can be just as life-altering.
Further is about being kind enough to yourself and giving the love you spread out to others, to yourself too. Aditya reminds us that being proud of oneself does not mean we are conceited. it simply means that we realise our worth, appreciate ourselves, and sometimes feel the need to pat ourselves on the back — and that’s (more than) okay.
