In the midst of the organized chaos that Mumbai, it is hard to believe art residencies, much less one of the world’s largest art-deco movements have stemmed from one of the many convoluted roots holding this city together. Mumbai’s grandeur is often assumed to start and stop in South Bombay but there’s so much more happening right under our noses that we tend to look past while in the midst of our respective ruts. This weekend, perhaps make an effort to discover a bit more about art from another perspective — right from a visual documentation of curiosity and confusion, an assemblage of organic detritus found along the coastlines of India, and changing landscapes with linear ink drawings and mixed mediums.
‘What About Art?’ (WAA) is curating an experience this weekend, on September 1 with artists Meghna Patpatia, Starlyn D’Souza and Wader Radhika. WAA is an art agency that supports art organizations, curators and artists for exhibitions and other art-related projects. The event with Carpe Arte is an open studio with the artists mentioned above, who will also be in attendance from 5 PM to 7 PM. Besides this open studio exhibition, Bombay Underground is hosting an international Zine exhibition, ‘Z Is For Zines’ at WAA, over the weekend too. All the zines on display are on sale as well — support a local artist or even someone across the world.
Plan ahead and you can do both at the same time, this Friday! Just keep in mind that the Zine exhibition will go on from September 1 to September 3, 3 PM to 9 PM, while the Open Studio with Carpe Arte is only on September 1, 5 PM to 7 PM.
