'Round 2': Mary Ann Alexander's New Single Captures The Purgatory Of Situationships
The nightmare that is the dating scene and the overall state of modern relationships in our time, I'm sure a lot of us have that one person we find ourselves circling back to. You start talking, things build up, and then, without any clear reason, it stops. A few weeks or months pass. And just when you’ve moved on, they show up again with a “Hey.” It’s not consistent enough to be called a relationship, but it’s not casual either. This on-and-off game of romance is what Mary Ann Alexander's new track Round 2 dives into.
The song lingers in the ambiguity of situationships — the kind that haunt you for months possibly years and yet you can't seem to let them go. It captures that familiar push-pull: the impulse to walk away and the instinct to return. The lyrics trace the back-and-forth with self-awareness and restraint. There’s desire, sure, but also doubt; distance; mixed signals; and a whole lot of bad decisions: "...truth be told I don’t know if what we’re doing is wise / but imma keep that aside.”
But while the lyrics acknowledge all the emotional mess, the sound stays deliberately fun. Round 2 is a bright, infectious pop track — clean hooks, bouncy rhythm, and the kind of chorus that is already in my head after just one listen. The music video is quite playful, modern, and full of colour as well. Mary Ann is seen in a tennis match with a guy as the 'Round 2' of their not-really-a-relationship begins, then at the beauty parlour getting dolled up as we often do in the thrill of meeting a new (or old) cutie in our lives, and finally in an animated version driving away in an auto as he runs behind her DDLJ style — a tongue-in-cheek nod to the drama we pretend not to love, but always do, and a great metaphor for a situationship that never really knows where it’s going.
Originally from Kerala and now based in Bengaluru, Mary Ann Alexander has been steadily building her voice as an R\&B pop artist with a clear sense of style with a sharp instinct for translating emotion into melody. But with Round 2, she lets loose a little. The tone is upbeat, the video is fun, and the storytelling subtle but sharp. Round 2 is about the absurdity of situationships, being a lover girl despite the odds, and going back to someone just to check if it feels different the second time — a cute little anthem for our cursed little dating lives.
