Soothing vocals, thoughtful lyrics, and a beautiful indie-pop synth-dominated dreamy soundscape — Abhibyanjana’s new three-track EP Breezing Through has it all. A singer-songwriter who is only 24 years old, her works show finesse well beyond her years. She is based out of Mumbai but her hometown is the beautiful Gangtok. She possesses a wonderful vocal tone that thoroughly complements the lyrics of her song. The synth-pop sound mix of her songs is also done with careful consideration and entertains the listener from the beginning till the end.
Abhibyanjana’s new EP will release on the 13th of January, 2023. It consists of songs peeking into an individual’s vulnerabilities, aspirations, and desires. Loaded with three tracks the EP combines diligent songwriting with indie-pop tunes. You could listen to it as if you were glancing through a few pages from an open journal. The first song and the titular track of the EP, Breezing Through, was written when she was 17 and at the cusp of new beginnings and ending; the song is about an ounce of regret but bountiful aspirations. The second track Honestly lays bare the agony a person sometimes feels due to helplessness and explores the crushing feeling of never being enough. The final track, River is about exploring the liminality of barriers of unfamiliarity through desire and the imagination that an online crush can bring. In the fast-moving world of the internet and social media, such a theme is very contemporary and relatable.
While Abhibyanjan does not want to box her music into any particular genre, she draws inspiration from genres like indie-pop and alternative R&B. Her music galvanizes these and reflects her evolving taste. She relishes in music by artists like Mitski, Q, Arlo Parks, FKA Twigs, BIBI, and more. She also draws influences from renowned indie-pop and folk artists such as Angus and Julia Stone, The Marias, Raveena, and Caroline Polachek, to name a few. Over the past two years, she has released two singles, Winter Love featuring Peeyush Nepal and Shampoo Bottle. In 2018, she released her first single, Groovy Girl, at 19. She was also featured as a playback singer in the indie film Pahuna: The Little Visitors (Dir. Pakhi Tyrewala) by Purple Pebble Productions.
Constantly juggling between being a full-time post-grad student and a musician, Abhibyanjana, will undoubtedly shine bright in the Indian music industry.
