Outhouse Jewellery Encourages Unabashed Self-Expression Through Zodiac-Inspired Designs

Fathima Abdul Kader

Zodiac signs - from signature characteristics to symbols have been a way for people to wear their personality on themselves, whether they are believers in astrology or not. I confess that I have chosen at times to blame horoscopes and the alignment of planets when things hit the fan in my personal life (yes, I know it was definitely trouble of my own making). I might also be guilty of crediting my flightiness to my Sagittarius personality at times. However, there is a sense of belonging that one finds with one's star signs, which can make one believe in the veracity of astrology. But beyond life phases and personality traits, Zodiac signs have been a commonly loved motif in fashion, especially in jewellery. From wearing Zodiac-appropriate jewels to bearing corresponding motifs, there have been many takes on horoscope-inspired jewellery.

The Gaze Zodiac Collection by homegrown label Outhouse Jewelry was one that strayed far from the norm and marks the luxury brand’s first foray into astrology-inspired jewellery. Through this collection, they seamlessly combined celestial motifs with personal storytelling in a manner that is unique to Outhouse as a brand. Founded by sisters Kaabia and Sasha Grewal, Outhouse is known for its unapologetic celebration of individuality through bold and innovative designs. With the Gaze collection, the brand offered an elevated take on zodiac jewellery, showcasing handcrafted pieces that invite wearers to be their most authentic selves. Central to their campaign was model Jasroop Kaur Singh - a befitting muse who embodies the ethos of self-acceptance and individuality that Outhouse strives to cultivate.

While zodiac jewellery is widely available across various markets, Outhouse’s Gaze collection adds a distinctive twist. The founders emphasise that the collection is about more than just astrology - it’s a reflection of how individuals perceive themselves. “Each piece in the collection marries the brilliance of individuality with the mystic wonders of the cosmos,” Kaabia and Sasha explained, highlighting the role of zodiac symbols as tools for self-expression

In talking further about the collection name Gaze, the founders shared how the notion of embracing an unapologetic celebration of the self and the dialogue that captures the power of seeing ourselves in our rawest, most unfiltered forms inspired the name and the collection, and is an exploration of authenticity and unfiltered self-expression. The use of lapis lazuli, a stone revered for its healing properties in particular, underscores this message. Known for its deep, celestial blue hue, the gemstone has been reimagined into bold structural motifs that transcend trends. "With jewellery resting intimately against your skin, a zodiac piece becomes an extension of your brilliant self," Sasha elaborated, while in conversation with Homegrown.

The idea for Gaze as a collection was to have each piece be more than an accessory; for it to become a part of the wearer’s personal narrative and identity. Outhouse Jewelry has always sought to create pieces that serve as conversation starters - designs that leave lasting impressions. With the Gaze Zodiac Collection, the founders remain true to their philosophy, encouraging people to embrace their individuality through artfully crafted jewellery. Their choice to work with Jasroop Kaur Singh further reinforces the brand’s commitment to inclusivity and storytelling.

The decision to collaborate with Jasroop Kaur Singh for the campaign was a natural one for the founders of the label. A creative of South Asian origin, Jasroop is an embodiment of the modern, multifaceted woman who embraces both her heritage and individuality. As someone who has Vitiligo and embraces it in all her uniqueness and authentic self-expression, Outhouse describes her as “the epitome of the OH Woman—someone who embraces herself in the rawest light with unapologetic grace.”

When conversing with Jasroop about being part of the campaign, she echoed the same. The themes of the Gaze collection resonated deeply with her, and she shared how “Outhouse is more than just a brand; it’s an unapologetic celebration of self. Each piece serves as a personal statement, allowing us to express our unique stories and identities.” Her participation in the campaign not only helped connect with a diverse audience but also sparked moments of introspection among wearers.  She also shared on social media how her collaboration with the brand felt like life coming full circle and in her own words -  “Being flown out to India, the country of my roots, by Outhouse for this campaign felt surreal. It’s a beautiful milestone: from undergoing treatments to cure my skin to now being paid to work there, celebrating inclusivity, embracing self-acceptance has brought everything full circle - this moment feels monumental for me.”

In talking to Jasroop about the campaign and collaboration with OH, she shared how the jewellery from the brand left a deep emotional impact on those who wore it something that stood out to her. She shared -

"One of the stand out moments for me was witnessing the genuine joy and connection people felt when they wore the pieces. The campaign sparked heartfelt conversations and reflections on self-identity, and it was inspiring to witness how the jewellery became a part of their personal narratives.”

By blending cosmic symbolism with bold craftsmanship and capturing personal narratives through design and visual storytelling, the Gaze collection captures a unique fusion of identity and astrology. It offers not just a statement but a transformative experience - empowering individuals to connect with their zodiac energy and express their personal stories. It is also literally transformative, from charms and pendants that can be zhuzhed up or pared down, to suit the occasion and the sensibilities of the wearer. Gaze Collection by Outhouse Jewellery, as the founders Kaabia and Sasha summarised, “is one that reflects both the brilliance of the individual and the mystical wonders of the cosmos.”
