PARA Design Studio Is Preserving The Past Through Sustainable & Thoughtful Renovation

Sobhika Vasanthan

Situated under the sunshine and laid-back charm of Goa, India, PARA Design Studio believes in design as a constant companion, walking alongside us and shaping our experiences.  The name itself, 'Para', meaning 'alongside', reflects this core principle. Founded by Priyanka Rustagi, PARA design studio is about creating a harmonious dialogue between the environment and the people who inhabit it.

Their design ethos is deeply rooted in a respect for local materials and technologies. They don't simply replicate the past; they innovate and experiment, breathing new life into traditional methods with a contemporary twist. This dedication to local craftsmanship is evident in their use of reclaimed teakwood, glass, and Kadappa stone –  materials that not only tell the story of the region but also offer sustainable and aesthetically pleasing solutions.

The studio's portfolio showcases its adeptness at transforming spaces. Take Amura, a Goan house in the town of Colvale. Built-in 1911, the house had fallen into disrepair. PARA's design seamlessly marries the old with the new. The ground floor retains the original structure and has been treated with fresh materials and finishes. The first floor, a contemporary interpretation, blends with the existing layout. This project beautifully demonstrates the fluidity of PARA's design language.

Another striking example is the Couér House in Pondicherry. This renovation project involved a beautiful courtyard house that needed to be adapted for modern living. The challenge lay in incorporating air conditioning while preserving the traditional open-air courtyard, a vital element in Indian architecture. PARA's ingenious solution involved using recycled teak wood louvers and sliding windows. This not only allowed for modern functionality but also ensured proper ventilation, transforming the courtyard into a lung for the house.

Mapusa House Number 4, once a grand home, now serves as a learning center for photographers. The studio's focus on documentation in this project highlights their commitment to preserving Goa's rich architectural heritage. By meticulously recording the structure, materials, and spatial arrangements, PARA helps us understand the lives and stories embedded within these historical buildings.

Para’s focus on local materials, innovative techniques, and a deep respect for tradition sets them apart.  Whether it's rejuvenating a historically significant place or creating a contemporary centre, PARA's designs create spaces that resonate with the past while embracing the future.
