It’s time to dial up that one homie who has a car, assemble the squad and go on a cruise through the city blasting this song on the stereo — that’s the first thought that crossed my mind when I heard Priya Ragu’s infectiously addictive latest single, Easy. Then when I watched the music video, I realized that it perfectly embodies the spirit that I had in mind. Priya Ragu is back with a banger of a track, through which she's taking us on a delightful joyride. As if that wasn't exciting enough, the music video, directed by the talented Jade Ang Jackman adds another layer of fun and visual flair to this musical adventure.

'Easy' was released in July 2023 and it's already heated up the airwaves, earning the coveted title of Radio 1's Hottest Record. But what makes this track stand out? Well, it's a refreshing work of art seamlessly blending alternative R&B, punchy electro-pop, and sun-kissed summer vibes, all with a hint of her Tamil heritage that’s bound to get your feet tapping and your spirits soaring.

We tend to make things way too complicated. We don't want to move too quickly, we don't want to say it too fast - we expect the other to make the first step - we dance between expectation, ego, and fear of rejection. I'm describing a moment where one is giving the green light but nothing is moving at all.

Now, let's talk about the video. Jade Ang Jackman captures Priya's infectious energy and translates it beautifully into playful, easy, and carefree visuals. The video is like a mini road trip with Priya and her crew, cruising through various local haunts in a classic BMW. It's the kind of visual storytelling that makes you wish you were right there with them, laughing, dancing, and enjoying life to the fullest. The music reminded me a lot of Saint John’s Roses and the creative essence in which it was crafted. Jade Ang Jackman's direction shows once again her knack for unique and engaging storytelling. It's not just about the music; it's about the experience, the emotions, and the shared moments that music and visuals like these can create.

Priya Ragu hails from Sri Lankan-Tamil heritage, with her parents having fled Sri Lanka in the 1980s during the civil war. While she was born and raised in Switzerland, her connection to her cultural roots remained steadfast throughout her upbringing. In her youth, her parents organized jam sessions within the local Tamil community in Switzerland, aiming to instill a deep sense of her Tamil heritage from a young age. Within this context, her father assembled a modest musical ensemble dedicated to performing songs from Kollywood films. In this band, Priya took on the role of a vocalist, her father skillfully played the tabla, and her brother, Japhna Gold, showcased his keyboard talents. Furthermore, her father actively encouraged both Priya and her brother to sing Tamil songs at cultural events and weddings, with the noble intention of raising funds to support individuals in Jaffna and Tamil Nadu. This upbringing not only honed her musical talents but also instilled a profound sense of cultural pride and community engagement. The music video wonderfully celebrates her Tamil heritage from a multicultural perspective.
