The PDKF Store Is Empowering Rajasthani Artisans With Their Valentine’s Day Gifts

Pari Pradhan

The most common Valentine's gifts are fleeting. While your beau would probably love to receive an overpriced box of chocolates or a dozen roses, those sweets will be gone and flowers will wilt by the end of the week. If you’re smart, you’ll get them a ticket to the Homegrown Festival and leave them with a lifetime of awesome memories to look back on. But if you're not going to be in Mumbai on February 22 and 23, the PDKF Store have beautiful Valentine's-core options for you to peruse.

PDKF stands for The Princess Diya Kumari Foundation, a non-profit committed to helping women build sustainable livelihoods while keeping Rajasthani craft culture alive. Their programs help girls in Rajasthan access education and teach women craft and financial literacy skills so they can achieve economic independence. The women artisans they train go on to sell their goods at the PDKF Store, which is available online and in-person in Jaipur.

Their artisans are trained in various forms of embroidery, including Gota Patti which originated in Rajasthan, machine stitching, quilting, and even blue pottery. As a result, the PDKF store sells a variety of goods and is sure to have something for your, or your partner’s, tastes. For Valentine’s Day, the PDKF Store has a series of pink and red clothes, accessories, and home decor available.

Some of their garments, like the pink Rainbow Dress, use strips of upcycled and block-printed materials, giving you a pretty and environmentally-friendly outfit to wear this weekend and beyond. I also love their Udupi dress, a trendy drop-waist mini dress that allows you to follow in today’s fashion it-girls’ footsteps while contributing to a good cause.

If you’re looking for something to spice up your home, the Sweetheart Pillows, with their handprinted floral pattern and pastel tones, are a coquettish addition to any home. And lastly, there’s my personal favourite out of their entire collection, the Fish Bag. Using handprinted fabrics, this purse is the perfect balance between quirky and classy: a surefire way to win over someone’s heart.

Shopping today is hard enough with all the ethical and environmental concerns you have to take into account. Valentine’s Day usually just adds to this stress, but luckily, the PDKF Store manages to strike that balance between aesthetic appeal and positive impact.
