And the Golden Globe award for 'Best Original Song' goes to Naatu Naatu from SS Rajamouli’s film RRR. The Indian media has recently been abuzz with RRR’s win and justifiably so at the 80th Golden Globe, a prestigious award ceremony honoring American television shows and the best films around the world, chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The song Naatu Naatu or Naacho Naacho, in Hindi, which translates to ‘Dance Dance’ is a vibrant, upbeat song composed by Rahul Sipligunj and Vishal Mishra and produced by the T-series recording company. It has brought home the gold and marks India’s first-ever win at the Golden Globes. Let us delve a little deeper into the making of the grand film and what it means for Indian cinema.
SS Rajamouli is no stranger to creating bombastic, high-budget, eye-popping, physics-defying, spectacular, super-hit films and RRR is no different. The film was released in March 2022, with a whopping budget of ₹550 crores, and is India’s most expensive film to date. It also broke the box office records becoming the fourth highest-earning Indian film ever. India’s second most popular language on screen is Telugu and the films in Telegu fall under the Tollywood industry. Although Tollywood produces fewer films than Bollywood, it has amped up many of the country’s biggest box office draws, several of which can be credited to S.S. Rajamouli.
S.S. Rajamouli in an interview discussed the idea behind the naming of the film. RRR is a historical fantasy based loosely on two real-life Indian rebels, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. RRR stands for Roudram Ranam Rudhiram in Telugu, which means 'Rage War Blood' but has been translated to English as 'Rise Roar Revolt.', for the sake of preserving the alliteration. It is also a play on the names of the director and the two main actors- (R)ajamouli, (R)am Charan, and Rama (R)ao Jr.
RRR has hit the headlines for several reasons by now but one of its most wonderfully executed aspects is the visual effect. The VFX supervisor, Srinivasa Mohan recently released the VFX breakdown video of Jr NTR’s opening scene with Tiger on Twitter. In the clip, director SS Rajamouli is in action as he instructs the visual team while filming that particular scene. While the actual sequence in the film gives you goosebumps, the BTS of the same will leave you awestruck.
This super-hit film was not without its fair share of problems in its initial stages. Even though it was one of the most anticipated films, it faced multiple delays due to COVID pandemic restrictions. Nevertheless, it managed to pull through and has not only mesmerized Indian audiences but film lovers from around the world. Other than the two protagonists and jewels of contemporary Telegu cinema, the movie also stars such as Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris.
