Yung Raja and Killa K reunite on 'JALSA,' a club-driven Tamil hip-hop track produced by FAUXE. Following their earlier collaboration 'Podu Mike,' the song leans into sharp flows, Southside swagger, bilingual wordplay and the excesses of a night out, while its music video throws the duo into a saturated, late-night world of flashing jewellery, drinks, dancing and crowded club scenes.
Singaporean-Tamil rapper and songwriter Yung Raja has spent years carving out his Tanglish sound, switching between Tamil and English with the swagger and comic timing that first brought tracks like 'Mustafa' and 'The Dance Song' into the scene. Bengaluru rapper Killa K, aka Kevin Lourd, came up through the city’s Tamil hip-hop scene, developing a style around rapid-fire delivery, wordplay and the slang of the neighbourhoods he grew up around. His 2024 collaboration with Raja, 'Podu Mike,' put those two approaches in the same room, with Killa K’s drum-heavy attack meeting Raja’s slicker Tanglish flow.
Now they are back with 'JALSA,' a 2:17 club track produced by FAUXE that wastes very little time getting to the point. The production runs on a heavy low end, clipped percussion and a fast-moving groove that gives both rappers room to bounce off each other. Raja and Killa K trade boasts about jewellery, drinks, girls, nightlife and getting loose with their koottalis, with the verses jumping between Tamil and English in the messy, funny, boastful way a night out actually sounds. There is plenty of Bengaluru in it too: Raja drops “Naan porandha ooru Singapore, but Bangalore-la poppin,” turning the collaboration itself into a meeting point between Singapore and Bengaluru.
The music video takes the Saturday-night premise and throws it into a saturated nocturnal world. Its visual language is drenched in electric blues and greens, but over a timeless, mythic setting with the artists surrounded by headless statues and fallen pillars as if they're transported to a relic of olden times.
Killa K brings his signature intensity and gritty wordplay to 'JALSA', with the track capturing the easy chemistry between him and Yung Raja. There’s a sense of two artists who know exactly how to play off each other, with Killa K describing the song as them doing what they do best without overthinking it. For Yung Raja, the release is another chance to work with his 'brother' as they take their South Indian sound to a wider audience. 'JALSA' also marks another release from ZIZA Records, where Yung Raja is signed, as the label continues growing its roster with artists whose music moves naturally across cultures and markets.
