Let’s face it—not everyone enjoys going out in crowded clubs or celebrating grandiosely in the streets or at a party during Christmas. Some people enjoy a quiet holiday celebration with their loved ones munching on some candies and drinking some hot beverages as they watch their favorite Christmas movies. If you are one of them, here is a list of movies with Christmas themes that you might enjoy:
I. Julie (1975)
Julie, starring Lakshmi Narayan and Vikram Makandar is the story of an Anglo-Indian family. The film portrays the restrictive social taboos of the time surrounding inter-caste marriage and unwed motherhood in India. It also throws light on restrictive conventions such as women drinking and having sexual relationships before marriage. The movie has a very upbeat and happy-go-lucky track titled My Heart is Beating that shows a family enjoying Christmas together as they sing, drink, and dance. This song was one of the first English-language songs in a Bollywood film and was sung by Preeti Sagar.
II. Shandaar (1974)
This movie stars some legendary actors from old Bollywood including Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila Tagore and Vinod Mehra. It is a tale about a kind business magnate who develops a liking for an employee's daughter after his own daughter dies in an accident. The movie has a song titled Aata Hai Aata Hai which is a Hindi rendition of Jingle Bells. During this retro song, there’s a Santa Claus played by Sanjeev riding on a sledge and celebrating Christmas with children. The energetic upbeat song is sung by Kishore Kumar, lyrics by Rajinder Krishan and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
III. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (2012)
This movie is the directorial debut of Shakun Batra and stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Imran Khan. It is a romantic comedy where Kareena plays the role of a hairstylist and Imran plays an architect who has lost his home in Vegas. A series of events build up to their meeting on Christmas Eve for a few drinks. This is shown in the title song of the movie as its background score. The couple roams around the streets of Vegas and has a jolly good time. The titular track is a Christmas treat as it is lively, upbeat, and has a catchy beat too.
IV. A Christmas Carol (1951)
There is no doubt that this old Christmas classic is a part of our list. It is the best adaptation of Charles Dickens' legendary tale. This outstanding film depicts the familiar Christmas Eve ordeal of nasty miser Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim), who's visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future.
V. Bad Santa(2003)
This movie is a gem of a black comedy and one of my personal favorites. Willie, a swindler and thief, dressed up as Santa, and his elf partner Marcus try to rob a mall. Their plan fails when the thief befriends an eight-year-old boy. This mischievous thieving Santa is played by the talented Billy Bob Thorton and Tony Cox plays his partner-in-crime as the elf.
VI. Home Alone(1990)
When we hear Christmas movies, Home Alone definitely comes to everyone’s mind. In fact, the entire trilogy is brilliant and will make you roar with laughter. Directed by Chris Columbus, the movie shows eight-year-old Kevin( Macaulay Culkin) being accidentally left behind when his family leaves for France. At first, he is happy with his newfound independence but soon two dim-wit thieves(Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) try to break into his home and that’s when the fun begins.
