From milk bread and honey cake to khova naan and Congress buns, these institutions remain Namma Ooru's favourites.

From the legendary Iyengar Bakery and its signature milk bread to Thom's festive plum cakes, Fatima Bakery's beloved puffs, Albert Bakery's iconic khova naan, and VB Bakery's famous Congress Bun, these bakeries have remained local favourites for generations. With a city that is constantly embracing new food trends, these bakeries continue to offer comfort, nostalgia, and some of Bengaluru's most iconic baked treats.

There is something undeniably charming about an old bakery. The smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the air draws you in, leading you to glass display cases lined with puffs, pastries, cakes, and other sweet treats.

In Bengaluru, there are several such bakeries that have become institutions in their own right, remaining a constant in the city's ever-evolving cultural landscape. At a time when a new concept-driven café seems to open every week, these bakeries continue to thrive, each known for its own beloved specialties. More than just places to grab a snack, they are woven into the city's history, shaped by both local traditions and international influences.

So, the next time you're looking for a Saturday afternoon treat beyond the usual matcha or latte, consider stepping into one of these classic Bengaluru bakeries. Not only will you discover some of the city's most beloved baked goods, but you'll also get a taste of its rich and enduring history:

Iyengars Bakery

One of the many hundreds of Iyengars Bakery outlets.

Finding the original Iyengars Bakery is like figuring out which was the first Udupi hotel in Bengaluru, but everyone seems to have settled on the Austin Town outlet being the OG one. Regardless of which Iyengar Bakery you go to, picking up a loaf of their milk bread is a must. It’s sweet, light, and delicious. I've spent many breakfasts smearing a dollop of butter and jam onto crisp Iyengar Bakery bread — the perfect combination of sweet and savoury. Along with this, their veg puffs (or "pupps," as the shopkeepers call them), honey cake, and coconut bun are all perfect, and proof of why the institution's name itself has become a local legend.

Thoms Bakery

They also make their own pizzas and burgers, making it the perfect spot for an evening snack.

Located in Fraser Town, Thom's is a bakery-cum-supermarket and a one-stop shop for all kinds of baked treats. Even before any of the international doughnut chains entered India, Thom's was making the perfect sugar doughnuts: warm, soft, and airy. And if you want to mix things up, their strawberry doughnuts are equally delicious. They also make their own pizzas and burgers, making it the perfect spot for an evening snack. During Christmas, it offers some of the most delicious marzipan treats and plum cakes in the city. For many Bengalureans, a festive season without a Thom's plum cake simply wouldn't feel complete.

Fatima Bakery

Established in 1957, Fatima Bakery is known for its chicken puffs and coconut cookies.

Established in 1957, Fatima Bakery is known for its chicken puffs and coconut cookies. Pair one with a cup of chai, and you'll understand why generations of Bengalureans keep coming back. Along with this, their usual assortment of buns, cakes and tea cakes is the reason why the place has achieved its cult status. Unpretentious, affordable, and consistently delicious, Fatima Bakery captures everything that makes Bengaluru's classic bakeries so enduringly special.

Albert Bakery

While the bakery offers all the bakery staples, it's the legendary keema samosas and khova naan that are a must try here.

Founded in 1902 and located on Mosque Road in Frazer Town, this century-old institution has remained a favourite across generations. While the bakery offers all the bakery staples, it's the legendary keema samosas and khova naan that are a must try here. The khova naan, with its flaky pastry and rich sweet filling, is reason enough to make the trip. During Ramadan, Albert Bakery becomes even more iconic, with customers lining up for its seasonal specials, including their famed bheja puffs.

VB Bakery

VB bakery has built its reputation on a handful of classics done exceptionally well.

VB bakery has built its reputation on a handful of classics done exceptionally well. Chief among them is the legendary Congress Bun — a soft bun stuffed with a spicy mixture of peanuts, roasted gram, coriander, and spices that have become synonymous with the bakery itself. While food trends may come and go, VB Bakery stands as a reminder that some of Bengaluru's greatest culinary icons are also its simplest.
