As the saying goes, ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’, and with abundant flea markets in Hill Road, Crawford and Colaba, Mumbai is a treasure chest–especially for those looking to upgrade their wardrobe on a budget. However, the origin of some of these clothes is suspect, and navigating them on a weekend is nightmarish. Relieving you from the hustle and bustle of fleas as summer approaches, Back Alley’s Thrift Shop is back to charm you in their sixth year.
A not-for-profit initiative, Back Alley was started in 2012 by Radhika Dhawan and Maya Bhogilal. With the aim to give back to society, Back Alley set up a thrift shop to sell items that one doesn’t require any more at throwaway prices to raise funds for meaningful causes because good things come to those who thrift. For their 12th event, Back Alley is collaborating with Fashion Revolution-a global campaign that is working towards a fairer, safer and transparent fashion industry, tailored to the conscious customer. ‘We think re-use & repurposing of clothes is cool and Back Alley is on a mission to build the cool to care crusaders and for that, we salute them and join them on their mission!’ states Suki Dusanj-Lenz, Country Head, Fashion Revolution India.
A supporter of sustainability, all the items on the shelves have been crowdsourced. This edition will see various vintage items from brands like Chanel, Moschino and many others. In case you’re worried about hygiene, all of the clothes on sale are unused–most of them still have their original price tags. Apart from clothes, you can also shop accessories, home décor and stationary.
While Radhika supports the education of underprivileged children and Maya champions the cause of Animal Welfare, the proceeds raised from this event will donated for both the causes to the Zilla Parishad schools (Anganwadi, Primary and Secondary) in Palghar to uplift the quality of education, and to the Animal Adoption Crusaders – a committee committed to the adoption of homeless animals.
