Eat Your Heart Out At The Bombay Canteen’s Independence Day Charity Feast

Homegrown Staff

Let’s face it—in our 71 years of independence, quite a bit has changed. Especially our understanding of ‘Independence Day’—an annual concept that seems to have diluted over time. Maybe it’s capitalism, maybe it’s not; either way–for the privileged lot, a large part of 15th August is spent catching up with content, doing household chores, heading out for quick getaways or simply sleeping in. However, this Independence day might just be your chance to step out for a noble cause instead.

This Wednesday, The Bombay Canteen is celebrating all things Indian with their 4th (Annual) Independence Day Daawat — a charity lunch being held in support of Miracle Foundation India, which is a non-profit organisation that takes care of and empowers children who don’t have homes. The concept is simple: drop by at the restaurant at any time between 11.30 am – 3.30 pm for a delicious meal put together by Chef Thomas Zacharias, and pay what you like at the end of your meal. Everything you donate will go to the children at the Miracle Foundation India.

With an eat-all-you-want policy, this year’s daawat is a tribute to the fact that unity in diversity is still very much an Indian sentiment and a wonderful one at that. This year’s meal will be served on a banana leaf. From Anirban Blah’s Meghalaya dish, called Khasi Black Sesame Chicken, to the Junglee Kheema recommended by fashion designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla to Chef Manish Mehrotra’s family recipe of Sattu Kachori from UP, this year’s menu comes with a range of regional dishes served with a selection of unusual chutneys and other condiments to ensure that your palate misses out on nothing. The menu also includes Kerala Kaya Ularthiyathu, Goan Kokum Dal and Bombay Maska Pav.

Offering an authentic community-style dining experience with the purest intentions at heart, The Bombay Canteen’s Independence Day daawat does not require any advance reservations. You can just drop by at your convenience and make the most of your leisurely afternoon. And if you can’t make it for the good food, you can still contribute to the cause online.
