Science Gallery Bengaluru’s latest exhibition season, 'QUANTUM', explores the strange behaviour of atoms, electrons and light through 34 artworks, interactive installations, games and programmes. It translates ideas like superposition, entanglement and quantum tunnelling into tactile, accessible experiences for young audiences. The season also connects these fundamental principles to technologies including semiconductors, lasers and quantum computing.
At Science Gallery Bengaluru, science is something to be experienced, questioned and argued with. Operating as a dynamic hub at the intersection of natural, human, and social sciences alongside art, engineering, and design, the gallery creates exhibition-seasons that run for a year and give young audiences different ways to engage with complicated subjects. For its latest season, the gallery has brings quantum physics — a field that gets into the behaviour of atoms, electrons and light, through 34 works by artists from six countries, along with interactive installations, games and programmes for visitors to get lost into.
This new season turns the spotlight onto the tiny building blocks of our universe, presenting quantum mechanics as an approachable story about nature and reality. The content takes complex laboratory concepts and breaks them down into accessible themes. Visitors can explore how subatomic particles like electrons and photons exist in fuzzy clouds of possibilities, shifting into definite states only when an observation occurs. The exhibition highlights interconnected links across distances, particles occupying several conditions simultaneously, and the discrete units that make up light and energy. Beyond these foundational ideas, the season shows how these tiny interactions power everyday tools like modern semiconductors, fiber-optic lasers, and quantum computing systems.
The exhibition breaks down these subatomic phenomena into simple ideas. The displays cover concepts like tunneling, where a tiny particle passes straight through a solid wall it should normally bounce off, showing how quantum probabilities leak through barriers. Another focus is entanglement — a deep connection where checking on one particle instantly tells a person what its distant partner is doing, an idea Albert Einstein famously called "spooky action at a distance". The exhibition also highlights superposition, where particles sit in multiple states at the same time until an observation takes place. Quoting Erwin Schrödinger, "...entanglement is not one but rather the characteristic trait of quantum mechanics," and the gallery uses these surprising behaviors to show how energy moves in individual packets.
A central focus of the season lies in making these subatomic principles tangible through sensory experience. Physical installations merge with digital elements to translate unseen behaviors into tactile, responsive environments. Dynamic displays react to visitors as they move, creating direct visual reflections of how observing a system fundamentally alters its outcome. Through hands-on models of light beams, wave patterns, and probability maps, complex ideas transform into intuitive, playful experiences that invite active participation.
For students, the gallery offers guided walkthroughs covering seven to nine exhibits, with hands-on activities and discussions around matter, light, energy, reality, superposition and entanglement. Its Mediators and Experimentors are trained young adults who act as conversation partners on the gallery floor, helping visitors work through the questions raised by the exhibits. QUANTUM ultimately treats quantum physics as an invitation to ask better questions: about matter, technology, observation, possibility and the strange and fascinating rules governing our universe.
