Meghna Mathew

While freebies excite most people, Roshni, an Urdu daily in Srinagar took it up a notch and surprised people with not only something they would appreciate but also something they must absolutely use

– face masks.

Replacing breaking headlines and colourful advertisements, the front page of the newspaper was adorned with a single sheet of blue that holds the capability of containing the spread of the novel Coronavirus. The mask was accompanied by the text, ‘mask ka istemaal zaroori hai’ (using a mask is important) in its Tuesday edition.

In conversation with Free Press Kashmir, Jehad Shora, the mind behind the mask move, said that people of Kashmir were finding reasons not to wear masks. Considering all they can do is try and contain the spread through precautions, he suggested supplying masks with the daily. The Editor-in-chief, Zahoor Ahmad Shora said they employed more people to complete the arrangements, and also sent the newspaper to the press three hours prior to give them enough time for attaching the masks.

According to News18, the total number of cases in the region has now risen to 14,650 while 259 people have lost their lives.
