Chaitanya Tamhane, director of the national award-winning film Court (2014), is back yet again with his second feature The Disciple, starring Aditya Modak who portrays the role of Sharad Nerulkar, a young Hindustani classical singer. The film is based on his unrelenting journey to follow his passion as he questions his perseverance towards his passion that may take him on a path of loneliness.
The film is executively produced by four-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, who is known for films like Roma (2018) and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), amongst others.
The Venice Film Festival is a historic event this year for many reasons. It is the only film event that is being organised with a public gathering of film enthusiasts, filmmakers, and artists “albeit in a more restrained format”, after theatres and other public places had been closed for gathering to constrict the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The festival also marks a big feat for India as The Disciple is the only Indian film in the running for the Golden Lion Award after a hiatus of 19 years. Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding had won the Golden Lion at the 58th edition of the film festival in 2001.
The Marathi feature received rave reviews after its global premiere at the Venice Film Festival on 04 September.
The Venice Film Festival began on 02 September and will go on till 12 September.
