What used to be quite a conservative law, the UP Revenue Code of 2006 has been amended by the Uttar Pradesh government to allow people of the transgender community to inherit agricultural land.

reports that the State Law Commission submitted a proposal for this inclusion to Yogi Adityanath’s cabinet back in March 2019, based on the Supreme Court ruling that recognises people of the ‘third gender’. That law initially only catered to the nomenclature of ‘sons’, ‘daughters’, ‘married’, ‘unmarried’ and ‘widow’.
According to Hindustan Times, Justice AN Mittal, Chairman of the State Law Commission pointed out that exclusion of the transgender community further encourages social ostracism, despite having protection measures in place for them.
It is about time laws in this country took an inclusive turn that caters to all its citizens. Here’s hoping this is the first of more to come!
