Urrak Is A Riverside Culinary Oasis Inspired By North Goa's 'Cashew Charm'

Disha Bijolia

A charming new riverside gem on the serene Nerul River in Saipem, ,North Goa Urrak Cookhouse & Cocktails is designed by Otherworlds design studio as a tribute to the river's legacy. Envisioned as a collection of islands formed by silt accumulated over time, the restaurant's design showcases irregular geometries that create a fluidic and intriguing navigation experience.

The restaurant's floor is a masterpiece in itself, adorned with an intricate mosaic of broken china tiles, reminiscent of the cherished traditions of Goan households. This mosaic serves not only as an aesthetic statement but also as a homage to the region's rich cultural heritage. Crafted with precision, the mosaic showcases a mesmerizing gradient of chip sizes, creating an illusion of movement that mirrors the flowing river just beyond its walls. Each tile, carefully laid by the hands of skilled artisans, transforms the floor into an evolving artwork, an intricate dance of colours and shapes that unfolds beneath every step.

Urrak Cookhouse & Cocktails

The inspiration for Urrak's design springs forth from the Nerul River's embrace and the vibrant ecosystem it nurtures. A speculative tale of time and transformation weaves through the restaurant's conceptualization, envisioning the accumulation of local debris along the riverbanks that metamorphoses into a collection of functional islands. These islands, each boasting its own distinctive purpose, invite guests to explore a harmonious blend of form and function.

The design narrative extends to the very essence of Urrak's identity. Just as the locally cherished cashew lends its name to the restaurant, its influence is felt throughout the space. The use of locally sourced materials, such as black tile mosaic and reclaimed yellow pine wood, pays homage to the region's resources while forging a distinctive spatial language. The fluidic canopy, woven from bamboo mat and textured plaster, mimics the Nerul River's meandering course, casting playful shadows and dappled sunlight that dance across the floor.

Urrak's design is more than the sum of its aesthetic choices; it's an ode to the landscape, a tribute to the ever-evolving Nerul River, and a testament to the harmonious coexistence between architecture and nature. As the sun dips below the horizon, casting its golden hues upon the muddy waters, Urrak stands as a testament to the soul of Goa — a place where time-honored traditions and innovative design converge, inviting all who enter to partake in a culinary journey that honours the land from which it springs.
