Wunderhaus Residency’s All Wear Clothing Line Is Dissolving Gender Specific Fashion Categorisation

Located in Pondicherry, Wunderhaus Artist Getaway and Homestay is a quaint and quirky residency inspired by southern architecture. Founded by Kedar Maddula, a NIFT alum, this solar-powered residency is the perfect getaway for artists who wish to breath in the salty sea breeze and let their creative juices flow. The space was initially started with the intent of providing a collaborative space to curators and artists.

Distraught by the suicides of cotton farmers, Kedar felt the need to exercise his social responsibility as a fashion designer. So, he introduced the label ‘Wunderhaus’ to enable skill-exchange between the youth and artists and artisans who work with indigenous textiles and handicrafts. Their philosophy revolves around exploring the historical craftsmanship that has its roots in traditional Indian textiles. Their brand is an attempt to bridge the gap between modern and rural India. With youth at the core of the brand’s initiative, they wish to facilitate and create a language that appeals to the youth sentiment while also providing employment and economic opportunities to those in the rural sector.

The founder says of the brand, “We are a cool and fashionable label and have a strong focus on popularising handloom and handicraft amongst the youth.”

Primarily a clothing and accessories brand, all their products are gender-fluid as the all-wear brand aims at dissolving gender-specific categorisation in the fashion industry. The Cyan Prints on their collection are made in collaboration with 56th Day. The brand specialises in creating what they refer to as “short capsule wearable art fashion collections.”

Wunderhaus Residency also offers studio space to curators to showcase their collections as well as collaborates and networks with other retailing studios in Pondicherry and Auroville to make their products accessible to a larger audience.
