A Homegrown Studio Is Bringing Sculptural Sensibilities To Their Bespoke Dinnerware

Disha Bijolia

Architectural trends have changed several times over the years, each style swinging in the opposite direction of its predecessor, but the one thing that as remained constant within interior design is plants. The kind of plants used in a Japandi household might be a different silhouette than one used in an art deco house but there is space and a need for some greenery in both. Against man-mad structures, the presence of a piece of nature brings a warmth and revival that nothing else can replace. It is this undeniable connection we have to nature that fuels our love for organic visual and tactical experiences. This connection is also what inspired Sycaro Studio’s ethos of blending in nature’s design aesthetics with utilitarian craftsmanship.

Co-founders Mananpreet Singh and Jasleen Kaur joined forces when they realized that woodworking was a way for both artists to practice their design philosophies. It became an avenue for them to get into the meditative aspects of craftsmanship and creation. Having an architectural background, Mananpreet & Jasleen look at product design through the lens of forms and rhythm which in turn has imbibed their creations with unique sculptural shapes. Asymmetry, anti-formalism and abstract forms, all tenets of postmodern design can be found in Sycaro’s creations that are reflected through the craftsmanship behind each object.

"At Sycaro, wood isn't just a material—it's like water, fabric, or even planets. Our pieces seem to melt, flow, and bend, showcasing the limitless possibilities of woodworking."
Sycaro Studio

Sycaro’s designs are inspired by forms in nature which is why you’ll hardly see any straight lines or right angles in their objects. Soft geometry and fluidity is at the core of the studio’s design language. Vriksha Mandala is a contemporary version of the traditional thali with interconnected bowls and projections on the back resembling branches of a tree. Their Squal Sweep Platter tray is derived from the wind movements in a squall sweep which can also be seen in ripples of water. Like craters of the moon, the bowls are embedded within the tray’s curves.

From bowls that replicate the meandering paths of a river, to spoons and ladles reminiscent of floating planets of the galaxy, Sycaro creates statement lifestyle products that bring an artful intention to our daily lives. They are a way for us to slow down and appreciate the joy and stimulation that comes from thoughtful design.
