"In life, as in art, the beautiful moves in curves."
— Edward Bulwer-Lytton
Curves possess an inherent allure that evokes a sensual and inviting response, setting them apart from the cold harshness of rectilinear shapes. Nature itself provides the inspiration for this preference, as vast rolling hills, waves of the ocean and gently contoured flower petals rarely conform to right angles. It is within this realm of fluid, poetic expression that Indian design studio soft-geometry finds its inspiration and purpose.
Founded in 2019 by Indian designers Utharaa L Zacharias and Palaash Chaudhary, soft-geometry is a collaborative studio that delves into the creation of collectibles centred around the theme of softness. Their work is an exploration of contemporary geometries, textures, and transparencies, infused with the beauty of slow and imperfect hand-worked techniques. Embracing their rich Indian heritage, Zacharias and Chaudhary draw inspiration from the abundant visual culture and hand-craft traditions of their hometowns, bridging the gap between traditional and modern methods of creation and perception.
Though they currently live and work between the bustling creativity of San Francisco, USA, and the cultural vibrancy of Kochi, India, their upbringing in India has left an indelible mark on their design sensibilities. From an early age, they were surrounded by the beauty of craftsmanship, witnessing the artistry and utilitarian elegance of hand-made objects that enriched every Indian home. Be it bamboo step stools with distinct colour patterns, block-printed bedding, hammered brass lottas, hand-carved wood boxes, handloom cotton clothes, or countless terracotta pottery pieces, these creations spoke volumes about the stories, culture, and traditions woven into their very fibers.
Every creation by soft-Geometry serves as a sensory experience that elicits an emotional response, bringing an intimacy and warmth to the often clinical and sterile world of modern design. In a world enamored with mass-production and quick disposability, the sudio's design ethos stands as a gentle rebellion, a testament to the beauty and significance of craftsmanship. Their creations are not just objects; they are manifestations of passion, cultural heritage, and a dedication to the poetic expression of design.
