#HGStreams: Fashion Short Film ‘Boksi’ Goes Beyond Society’s Restrictions

Meghna Mathew

Often times, we come across pieces of art that take a little longer for us to admire. In fact, initially, we may not even be able to truly comprehend them. The more we immerse ourselves in it, and upon paying just a little more attention, we realise what it had been trying to convey all along.

‘Boksi’, a fashion short film by visual artist Swapneel, is one such piece of art. In Namchi, which is situated in southern Sikkim, the film was made possible with the help of stylist Pragya and performer Roshnee. They created what is a story of a creature shifting identities to not only finally attain freedom but also find their own self.

The story is narrated through the prism of fashion but does not impose upon the journey of the subject. It helps to know that the articles of clothing contributed to a circular economy by way of being preloved, thrift or vintage.

Swapneel explains it well by saying, “With a story of fashion evolution, remaking, and discovery, we wanted to help create a translation of how dignity in truth, pride and self-expression is more style than clothes.”

‘Boksi’, whether we realise or not, is a testament to our growth as humans and individuals – with or without fashion as a means to convey it.
