St+Art’s Latest Collaboration Is a Mural That Binds Community & Creative Sentiment

Inculcating the artistic spirit in celebration is not a strange concept. However, adding a fresh twist to it is St+art and Illustrator Kneethee. Pushing the envelope of street art, the Uddakam District Festival featured a marvellous and dreamy work of mural that is open for viewing for all in Ukkadam, Coimbatore.

The work has been created as part of the second edition of the Ukkadam Art District for which St+art in collaboration with Asian Paints and the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) commissioned six artists to interpret one central theme in October 2021.

“This theme is centred on a simple question, “Have you ever wondered about the implications of foregrounding all that is languishing in the background?” It explores our changing relationship with everyday objects.

“The second artwork in our lineup is by Kneethee, who is an artist, illustrator and pattern designer based out of Bangalore,” says the St+art Instagram page. “She loves drawing all things dreamy, inspired by nature and life. Neethi brings the outside in by transferring the illustrations to the interior through paintings, murals and wallpapers for various locations across India. Her work fundamentally reimagines everyday objects and democratises art in the process.”

“For the Ukkadam art project, I explored the relationship of the community with the objects around them, especially during and after the lockdown. Some of the most interacted with items were also the most ordinary utility items. Things that are usually in the background of their lives took a front seat and occupied more space not only in their homes but also in their minds. These are what people of the community associate with their veedu/home,”
