The Father Of Modern Indian Art: Raja Ravi Varma’s Precious Works Will Be Auctioned As NFTs

Meghna Mathew

The world of NFTs extends far and wide. The ongoing craze of these Non-Fungible Tokens, while confusing for many, also piques the curiosity of those involved or invested in the ever-growing world of art and technology.

Introducing Indian heritage to this world is RtistiQ, a distinct physical and digital art marketplace, in collaboration with artist foundation gallery g, and the Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation.

Raja Ravi Varma’s timeless works of art The Coquette and Reclining Nair Lady will be auctioned as NFTs on RtistiQ’s platform from 17 February 2022 to 20 February 2022.

Immortalising the works of the ‘father of modern Indian art’, this NFT drop does much to preserve India’s artistic heritage. These works are considered national treasures and are restricted from being exported. Tokenising them and minting them as NFTs is a one-of-a-kind move. Disrupting boundaries for how art is consumed, the introduction of these pieces into the digital art sphere is a remarkable and historic event.

“To Ravi Varma, art had no boundaries – not by geography and certainly not by class. Till today, his keen ability to document daily life continues to captivate art enthusiasts and his paintings can be found in some of the most notable art collections and museums around the world.”

— Rukmini Varma, Chairperson, Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation, artist, and great great granddaughter of Raja Ravi Varma

Traditional art as NFTs is a trend we may be seeing more of soon, but to get your hands on Raja Ravi Varma’s previous work, be sure to get your auction face on Thursday, 17 February.
