If there’s one thing that can cure the monsoon blues, it’s a cup of piping hot chai accompanied by a too-hot-to-hold samosa. It’s been a secret no one really keeps, passed down from generation to generation — it is perhaps the only bright side to the Indian monsoon. Irrespective of the weather though, this is the only kind of ‘combo meal’ we need to fend off any craving. While it helps that a samosa legend is located right next to us, sometimes the typical aloo and pea mixture doesn’t quite cut it. This of course spurred on a compilation of samosas, whose creative fillings contest the classic samosa; whilst some remain true to the OG Indian samosa.

I. Mava Samosa at B Merwan

Where: Ali Bhai Remji Road, Opposite Station, Grant Road East, Grant Road

We don’t know who keeps spreading these rumours that keep going around about B Merwan closing down, but it needs to stop — especially since their Mava cakes are one of our favourites. So imagine our surprise when we came across...mava samosas. No, that wasn’t a typo or a mistake, they’ve managed to combine the sweet and savoury world like every other fancy joint out there. No more Chilli Chocolate Cake or whatever else is out there, grab a Mawa samosa instead!

Cost: INR 12 for a treat like no other? Yes, please.

II. Samosa Soup at Burma Burma

Where: Kothari House, Allana Centre Lane, MG Road, Behind Mumbai University, Fort

While Burma Burma is probably the last place you’d go to for a samosa, it’s also the only place to combine two comfort foods in one dish. Meet the Samosa Soup. Yes, an odd combination at best, but consider this — it’s a bowl of warmth, that feeds your soul with a crispy golden center, waiting to be bitten into. It’s a win-win, if you ask us.

Cost: Food for your soul and possibly a future guilty pleasure at INR 330

III. Samosa Chole at Guru Kripa

Where: 40, Guru Kripa Building, Road 24, Near SIES College, Sion

When an establishment’s samosas supply over a third of the city, you know they aren’t messing around. If you visit Guru Kripa, you can’t get JUST the samosa; you absolutely have to get it with a side of chole. We don’t make the rules here but trust us, these are rules you don’t want to break.

IV. Mutton Samosa at Hearsch Bakery

Where: 90/A, Next to Holy Family Hospital, Hill Road, Bandra West

A Bandra landmark for mutton samosas, Hearsch has been around for years. Loyal customers have little to complain about, considering the bakery has maintained its quality as well as recipes over time. To be honest though, their mini samosas are the real winners here. Bite-sized and decently priced.

Cost: INR 25 for a juicy samosa that’ll make your week.

V. Punjabi Samosa at Pankaj Farsan

Where: 20, Shridhar Apartment, Hanuman Road, Vile Parle East

With years spent perfecting the craft of crispy samosas, you know you can’t go wrong when you order in from Pankaj Farsan. Plus, consider it a bonus that their in-house speciality are their thin wafers. All you’ll have to do is brew a cup of good ol’ ginger chai. (Or whichever flavour is your poison.)

Cost: INR 30 per plate of pure, crispy goodness.

VI. Punjabi Samosa at Punjab Sweet House

Where: Shop 3 & 7, Dheeraj Arcade, Pali Naka, Pali Hill, Bandra West

If you’re looking for a simple Punjabi samosa with no fuss or frills, this is it. There’s no denying that sometimes, simplicity is the only answer. Served with a side of chutney, (and sweet chilli sauce, if you ask nicely) this samosa is the only kind of love triangle you need in your life.

Cost: One golden triangle for INR 15

VII. Poha Samosa at Samrat

Where: Outside Santacruz Station, West

Here’s one way to eat your breakfast and evening snack in one go, at the Samrat Stall outside the Santacruz Station. With northern style poha stuffed into the familiar golden shell of a samosa, this little stall thought outside the box — and Mumbai loves it. You’ll want to get there early, they’re nearly always sold out come late afternoon/early evening.

Cost: INR 32 for the best of both worlds in one plate.

VIII. Spinach and Cheese Samosa at Soam

Where: Ground Floor, Sadguru Sadan, Opposite Babulnath Temple, Chowpatty

If you wanted to feed someone their greens, or change their opinion on spinach — this isn’t the healthiest option, but we can assure you, it is THE best. They’re sold as minis, and are small enough to pop into your mouth whole, but you’ll want to savour this for as long as you can.

It’s hard to stop at one!)
